Adamawa State Implements N70,000 Minimum Wage Following Governor Fintiri’s Commitment
In a significant move to enhance workers’ welfare, the Adamawa State government has begun implementing a new minimum wage of N70,000 for its employees. This development follows a promise made by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri during a meeting with the Labour Union on August 19, 2024.
Governor Fintiri’s commitment to raising the minimum wage was fulfilled when workers received their August salaries reflecting the new pay scale. This makes Adamawa State the first in the country to implement the N70,000 minimum wage since it was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
Civil servants across the state have expressed their gratitude and satisfaction with the new policy. Saliyatu Mohammad, a civil servant in the Ministry of Land and Survey, praised Governor Fintiri for his dedication to the welfare of the workforce. “Governor Fintiri has demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of the workers with this gesture,” she said.
Emmanuel Amos Tumba, a school teacher in the state, also confirmed the salary increase, stating, “I can confirm to you that the salary increase has been effected and I received it. I commend the governor for this.”
The decision to raise the minimum wage was officially announced by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Fashe. Following a meeting with Governor Fintiri, Comrade Fashe revealed that state government workers would start receiving their new wages from August 2024, while local government employees would see the increase reflected in their September salaries.
This move underscores Governor Fintiri’s commitment to improving the living standards of state employees and sets a precedent for other states in Nigeria. The implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage reflects a significant step towards ensuring economic stability and fairness for civil servants in Adamawa State.
