Dr. Mukail Akinde, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, in Ogun State, has shed light on the institution’s recent innovation: an electric automated tricycle. He emphasized that successful commercial production of this locally invented tricycle could significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imports, alleviate pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and create new job opportunities for the nation’s youth.

During his remarks, Dr. Akinde highlighted the importance of this innovation for the country’s economy and called on the Federal Government, as well as corporate organizations, particularly those in the manufacturing sector, to support the polytechnic’s commitment to scaling the production of this invention.

His statements came during a visit by the institution’s Governing Council, led by Chairman Alhaji Garba Gashua, and representatives from the National Automotive Design and Development Council. The delegation visited the polytechnic’s innovation center to inspect the newly developed electric automated tricycle.

Dr. Akinde proudly noted that the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, is the first institution in Nigeria to produce this type of tricycle, which was both built and assembled at the institution’s innovation center. The prototype represents a significant step forward in the school’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation, research, and development.

He urged the Federal Government to provide more funding to support the institution’s capacity for innovation, stressing the need for financial backing to advance their research and development initiatives. “My expectation now is to see how we can take the tricycle to the industry,” he said, adding that the current model is a prototype, while the main design will accommodate a rider and two passengers. The tricycle is also designed to include a solar-powered panel for charging, showcasing its potential as an eco-friendly transportation solution.

Dr. Akinde expressed the polytechnic’s desire to partner with industry players, such as Innoson, to bring the tricycle to commercial production. He warned that if the tricycle is not produced in sufficient quantities locally, Nigeria might be forced to import similar products, further straining the nation’s foreign exchange reserves.

He concluded by outlining the institution’s ambition to establish a mini assembly plant capable of producing at least 10 tricycles or more, starting with a plan to manufacture three units for use on the campus in the upcoming season. Dr. Akinde’s appeal to various stakeholders underscores the need for collaborative efforts to transform this innovative project from prototype to a commercially viable product, enhancing both educational outcomes and economic development.
