On Sunday, the FCT Police Command reported a violent attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shiite group, resulting in the deaths of two police officers and severe injuries to three others. The attack occurred at Wuse Junction, where the police were stationed at a checkpoint.
According to SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, the officers were ambushed without provocation. The attackers, armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices (bottles filled with kerosene), and knives, targeted the police checkpoint, resulting in the death of two officers. The three surviving officers sustained serious knife injuries and were left unconscious and hospitalized. Additionally, three police patrol vehicles were set on fire during the assault.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, strongly condemned the unprovoked attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The police have made several arrests in connection with the incident, and the situation is now under control with normalcy reportedly restored to the area.
CP Igweh assured that further updates on the situation would be provided as more information becomes available.
