The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has praised the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) for selecting a female candidate, Ndidi Patience Ofure Key, as its flag bearer for the upcoming September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
During a courtesy visit to the Benin Royal Palace, the Oba expressed his admiration for the PRP’s decision to field a female candidate, noting the rarity of such occurrences in the state’s political landscape. He remarked, “This is the only female gubernatorial candidate I have seen. In our patriarchal society, it is commendable that a woman has been chosen to represent your party. It shows recognition of the strength and importance of women.”
The monarch further emphasized the significance of women in society, stating, “Without women, what would men do? It is refreshing to see a female gubernatorial candidate, and we hope that your presence will bring joy and positivity to the campaign process.”
Ndidi Patience Ofure Key, the PRP’s candidate, explained that her visit to the palace was to seek the Oba’s blessings and prayers. She highlighted the issues of retrogression, hunger, and suffering in Edo State as her motivations for running for office. If elected, she promised to focus on three key areas: human capital development, economic diversification, and environmental transformation.
Key noted the poor state of infrastructure in the state, such as roads, schools, and hospitals, and emphasized the need to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. She also stressed the importance of empowering the youth, women, and men through skill development to foster self-reliance.
The Oba’s support and commendation of the PRP’s choice reflect the growing recognition of the crucial role women can play in leadership and governance.
