Federal Government Accredits Universities in Togo and Benin Republic for Nigerian Students
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially accredited eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic to award degrees to Nigerian students. This decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme on August 26, 2024.
The accredited universities include:
In Togo:
- Université de Lomé
- Université de Kara
- Catholic University of West Africa
In Benin Republic:
- Université d’Abomey-Calavi
- Université de Parakou
- Université Nationale des Sciences, Technologiques, Ingénierie et Mathématiques
- Université Nationale d’Agriculture
- Université Africaine de Développement Coopératif
Mamman also revealed that the Nigerian government has canceled 22,700 certificates issued by unaccredited institutions in these countries. He emphasized that the invalidation was essential to safeguard Nigeria’s reputation, noting that many of these certificates were obtained through fraudulent activities.
He warned that Nigerians with degrees from these illegal universities might face repercussions, particularly those employed in government positions. Mamman urged both public and private sectors to assist in identifying individuals holding fake certificates from unaccredited institutions.
This move is part of the government’s broader effort to ensure the integrity of educational qualifications and protect the value of Nigerian degrees.
