Enugu State Begins Computer-Based Assessments for Smart Schools Recruitment
The Enugu State government has launched assessments for the 26,000 candidates who applied for 6,000 job slots in its new smart schools initiative. The computer-based assessments began four days ago and are being conducted simultaneously at the Enugu State College of Education Technical and the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.
During the assessment, it was observed that many candidates faced challenges with basic computer operations. Despite being allocated 45 minutes for the test, some candidates struggled to complete it due to difficulties with the system.
In a statement at the IMT venue, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, Commissioner for Education, emphasized that the exercise reflects Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s commitment to improving education standards in the state.
“We received 26,330 applications and needed a bias-free method to evaluate their competency in subject areas and digital literacy,” Mbah explained. “The computer-based test, conducted at both Enugu State College of Education Technical and IMT, evaluates at least 6,000 candidates daily.”
Candidates are assessed in four areas: the subject they intend to teach, English language, general mathematics, and basic digital literacy. Mbah highlighted that previous assessments revealed a significant lack of basic numerical and literacy skills among students, underscoring the need for proficient teachers.
“Our smart schools are equipped with high-tech facilities such as computers, smart boards, and digital libraries,” Mbah said. “We require teachers to have at least basic computer knowledge.”
The recruitment process is open to all qualified individuals, with no biases. Of the 26,330 applicants, 6,000 will be selected for six months of intensive training. Upon completion, they will be posted to smart schools under ENSUBEB’s supervision.
Only certified smart teachers will be posted to the smart schools. This current phase aims to recruit 6,000 teachers, with a second phase planned for January to capture a total of 12,000 teachers, expecting at least 10,000 successful candidates.
Mbah assured that the recruitment process will remain transparent and free from political interference. “We are investing in smart schools to provide a world-class education. We cannot compromise by hiring unqualified individuals,” he stressed.
The commissioner also noted that the assessment is designed to address local government areas’ needs and reduce absenteeism among teachers.
